OCD Therapy in Chicago & Northbrook IL
If you live with OCD, you know what it is like to have your mind turn on you: the intrusive thoughts, the mounting anxiety, the rituals that provide temporary relief before the cycle starts again. You know how exhausting it is to manage, and how much life it can take up.
OCD is also one of the most treatable mental health conditions. With the right approach, real change is possible.
- Contamination OCD: fear of germs, illness, or contaminating others
- Harm OCD: intrusive thoughts about causing harm to oneself or others
- Religious or scrupulosity OCD: intrusive blasphemous thoughts or fears of sin
- Relationship OCD (ROCD): obsessive doubts about a relationship or a partner’s feelings
- Sexual orientation OCD: intrusive unwanted doubts about sexual orientation
- Pure-O: primarily obsessional OCD with covert mental compulsions
- Symmetry and ordering compulsions
- Checking compulsions: locks, appliances, safety
- Perinatal OCD: intrusive thoughts specific to pregnancy and new parenthood

We also integrate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which helps clients develop a different relationship to intrusive thoughts rather than trying to eliminate or argue with them.
What is the best therapy for OCD?
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is the gold-standard, evidence-based treatment for OCD, recommended by the International OCD Foundation and major clinical organizations. ACT is often integrated with ERP and has growing evidence support. Medication (typically SSRIs) may also be a component of treatment.
What is the difference between OCD and anxiety?
OCD and anxiety disorders share features but differ importantly. OCD is characterized specifically by the obsession-compulsion cycle, in which compulsive behavior maintains and strengthens the anxiety over time. Treatment for OCD, specifically ERP, differs meaningfully from standard anxiety treatment.
Is OCD curable?
OCD is generally considered a chronic condition that does not go away entirely, but with evidence-based treatment, particularly ERP, symptoms can be significantly reduced to a level where they no longer meaningfully interfere with daily life.
What if my OCD does not involve cleaning or checking?
OCD takes many forms beyond contamination and checking. Harm OCD, ROCD, religious OCD, and primarily obsessional presentations are all forms of OCD that respond to the same evidence-based treatment. Whatever the content of your obsessions, ERP is the appropriate first-line approach.
Is OCD therapy available via telehealth?
Yes. ERP for OCD has been successfully adapted for telehealth delivery with strong research support. Midwest Counseling offers OCD therapy via telehealth across Illinois and many other states.
